♥ 27 Dec SHSS Alumni Gathering...
(*alot of vball slogan is being used, so if u r 'lost' abt what i'm saying, feel free to ask me k? =P )
It was sure fun! Alot of the 'old folks' came back and yes yes, i'm from the first batch of gals and Pei is my only team mate who turned up too. She was with her baby girl so she cant play. The organisers mixed the players from different batches so each team consists of people who you might have never met during the 4-5 years in SHSS. Feel so old playing with the young ones.... yet... the feeling is so cool! And i must say i feel proud of myself that i still can play! LOL!
During 1 of the game, i was in the same team as Clare, Yanglin, Joleen, Xuanting (cant rem who's the 6th player) and i must say, i really enjoyed having Clare as the setter =P She doesn't look at our skills but set for everyone to have a chance in spiking the ball. In most of the games i've played, whether friendly matches which is uncompetitive, just for fun, or during my growing up years with volleyball in JC, Uni etc, all the setters i've met, always set the ball for the most powerful players/spikers... so those not very good ones like me, usually doesn't get to spike much. I was encouraged but also realised that somehow, when i'm on court, the lack-of-confidence side of me surfaced... And during this particular game, i put aside that and just enjoyed the game cos we are 'equal'... i also see the importance of being a setter cos you set the tone for the players...
Thoughts that came to mind was.... Similarly, in my circles of friends, am i the 'setter' among them? Do i control the tone of the group? Do i stir the group to like someone or unite & dislike someone? I'm also reminded of the time when i was in Sec 2 & 3 in the volleyball team. As my skills r not as good as my peers, i remembered being an 'outcast'... hmm, maybe that's too strong a word... let me re-phrase, i am not in the 'IN' group, the happening group which consists of the main 6. I feel very left out... but probably that's why i always have a soft spot for those sitting alone out there, quiet, new to the group etc. I would have a tendency to go forward & make the person feel welcome. Well, the sad thing is, after the person warmed up to the group, i'm usually 'forgotten'... i used to feel upset whenever that happened... But i've also learnt to see that God is using me to be a bridge to people (= Well, the amazing things that God can do.. He turned a bad experience to something good.
My younger bro & sis were from SHSS volleyball team too... My brother & i were 2 years apart, while i'm 8 years apart from my sis. I kinda manipulated the teaming in such a way that both of them were playing on the same team. I don't think they have ever played together in the same team / volleyball game before... As i watched them playing in the same team, i feel a sense of pride... like a mother feeling proud of their children... And it's so heartwarming to see them 'covering' each other in the game, 'setting' for the other to spike etc...
The highlight for me is the last game --> The Siblings team!
Actually i've manipulated such that both my sis & bro will get to play in that game... i must admit my age is not on my side LOL! Was feeling quite tired after 3 games during that 2 hours... BUT my sis had to meet a customer cos she's selling a bag online. Though she assured me that she will rush back asap, it was still too late... the game was over by the time she's back. I had to play...
Maybe i'm too nervous... none of the ball i served got over... BUT i still enjoyed the game for i don't ever remember playing a volleyball game with my younger bro, let alone on the same team! Oh, and i dived for a ball during the match and saved it! I feel so proud of myself... The sec 2 boys that i got to know during the camp were teasing me after the game that they were surprised that i could still dive! HAHAHA! These naughty boys had been trying to find out my age during the camp but i refused to tell them. And who knows, after the game, we were asked to take photos by batch. And i had to stand out when the 1st batch was called out... They were filled with glee, cheeky looks & knowing smiles! So irritating... yet endearing! LOL!
Ms Teo (my 1st coach) came back!
Ms Teo just came back from canada for a year of studies and also time of rest & catching up with God. And what she shared was very much on my heart too...
Many of the ex-SHSS volleyball players are very very passionate about the game volleyball and there is a very strong bond & identity as SHSS volleyball player. But volleyball has more often than not become 'god' in their life. Even for those who had accepted Christ & meeting the labourers for regular Bible Study, their identity is SHSS volleyball player & not 'i am a child of God'. Hence, bcos of their overwhelming passion for the game, more often that not, they are willing to give time to the game but not in spending time with God or helping their juniors to come to know God. God to them is someone they pray to whenever they need help eg competitors, exams etc.
And becos their identity is not in Christ, as God's children, and not only as SHSS volleyball players, after they graduated, they no longer walked with God... many drifted away more often than not... I do feel a burden for them... cos both my younger bro & sis are real life examples of that... Andy even turned to idol worship... no longer believing in God... i feel really sad whenever i think of it... that's why i'm here in navteens... using my gifts to serve in this areas while my energy, commitment in life etc still permits me to...
